On April 13, Fudan University announced the establishment of the Institute of Forensic Science. Led by LI Chengtao, distinguished professor at Fudan University, one of the institute’s aims is to explore interdisciplinary research between forensic science and other fields, including but not limited to computer science, medicine, law, and life sciences, etc. It will serve as a catalyst for forging new paths for forensic sciences and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Aside from its dedication to exploring new paradigms in collaborative study with other fields, the institute will tackle important challenges within the fields of multidimensional and comprehensive reconstruction of criminal science, research into novel technologies for identification and their applications, and the standardization of forensic science processes.

“The continuous emergence of new technologies, the lack of comprehensive innovation platforms and talents with interdisciplinary background, and requirements of ‘trial-centered’ evidence review have put forward great demands on forensic sciences,” said JIN Li, president of Fudan University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, at the inauguration ceremony. He pointed out, the university has both the responsibility and ability to take the initiative to adapt to new developments in forensic sciences, and make more efforts to take forensic sciences to a higher level.

CONG Bin, member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, vice chairman of the committee for Constitution and Law, deputy director of the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, CAO Heqi, director of Division V, Medical Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Duarte Nuno Vieira, former president of the International Society for Forensic Science, former president of the International Society of Forensic Medicine, former president of the European Commission for Forensic Medicine and chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, also addressed the inauguration ceremony.
